Geotechnical engineering, the branch of civil engineering that investigates the engineering behavior of earth materials and is responsible for pinning infrastructure down on earth, is a career with amazing possibilities! But where should you head to if you want to follow this career?

After analyzing the Civil, Environmental and Construction Industry job posting data from CEECareers.com for 2022,  we are now able to show you the hottest places with the highest demand for geotechnical engineering jobs.

There is significant demand for geotechnical engineers in the U.S., as shown in the map below. In total, 530 geotechnical jobs were posted in the US out of a total of 3,763 posted throughout the year. Geotechs are sought throughout the country, and especially on the West and East Coasts.

For 2022, the best place for a geotechnical engineer to look for a job lies, by far, in the West Coast. California, with 13.04% of total jobs posted seems to have the best opportunities!

Second comes another representative of the West Coast, the state of Washington with 8.15% of the jobs posted during 2022. Third place is captured by Texas, which held the 7.34% of last year’s job posts.

Three states from the NorthEast follow, which makes the area a hot place to look for a geotechnical job. Pennsylvania has 6.79%, while New York and Massachusetts each had 5.71% of the available positions in 2022, which makes them rank as the fifth hottest place in U.S. to look for a geotechnical job.

The rest members of the list are more dispersed geographically, with Colorado (4.89%), Florida (3.80%), Illinois (3.53%) and North Carolina (3.26%) completing the top 10.
