Job Description

The Middlesex Corporation specializes in building and reconstructing highways, bridges, marine, rail, and transit facilities through its collaborative team approach and focus on core values.  In addition, Middlesex Asphalt in Central Florida is one of the largest and most productive asphalt plants in the United States, with Middlesex Paving earning an equally solid regional presence and reputation. Position Summary:The Construction Manager is responsible for the overall direction, execution, and financial performance of heavy civil bridge projects. This role provides leadership in the planning, coordination, and delivery of bridge construction, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and budget goals are achieved. The Construction Manager directs and supervises the work of project managers, superintendents, engineers, and field staff, while maintaining strong relationships with owners, DOT representatives, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in compliance with all Safety policies and procedures, reporting all accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
  • Ensure projects adhere to company, state, and federal safety standards, with a focus on bridge-specific hazards such as work-at-heights, traffic control, and crane operations.
  • Champion the company’s core value of “Safety First” in every aspect of bridge construction.
  • Manage pursuits, technical proposals, preconstruction cost development, and subcontractor qualifications specific to bridge and heavy civil projects.
  • Provide oversight in the development of detailed construction schedules, including sequencing of bridge operations (piling, falsework, formwork, concrete pours, steel erection, deck placement, etc.).
  • Direct all project activities, ensuring compliance with DOT specifications, environmental regulations, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with owners, engineers of record, and DOT inspectors to ensure alignment throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Responsible for all aspects of cost management, including forecasting, tracking, and reporting for heavy civil bridge projects.
  • Lead the quarterly cost reporting process and proactively manage the change order process.
  • Review and negotiate agreements, subcontracts, and vendor contracts specific to bridge construction scopes (structural steel, concrete, post-tensioning, specialty subcontractors).
  • Lead and mentor project managers, engineers, and superintendents; provide professional development opportunities for high-performing teams.
  • Chair kickoff meetings, progress meetings, and project reviews to ensure project alignment and accountability.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with project owners, DOT representatives, and community stakeholders to ensure satisfaction and address concerns.
  • Foster strong subcontractor and vendor relationships; resolve technical and operational issues as needed.
  • Oversee design coordination, constructability reviews, and temporary works planning for bridge projects.
  • Ensure compliance with structural specifications, geotechnical requirements, and environmental permits.
  • Drive innovation in construction methods, equipment utilization, and materials management to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Resolve construction claims and disputes in collaboration with legal and executive leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in Heavy Civil Construction, with a strong track record in bridge and transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Proven expertise in bridge construction methods, including structural steel erection, concrete bridge deck placement, falsework/shoring, piling, cofferdams, and roadway tie-ins.
  • Knowledge of DOT standards, FHWA requirements, and transportation industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, schedules, quality control, and all phases of construction.
  • OSHA 10 Certification (OSHA 30 preferred).
  • Excellent computer skills, including project management and scheduling software (P6, MS Project, etc.).
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to lead in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with digital takeoff, BIM, and design programs is a plus.
