Job Description

Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking talented and experienced candidates for a Structural Lab Technician opening at the Janney Technical Center (JTC) located at our corporate headquarters in Northbrook, IL. If you believe you fit this profile and meet the qualifications detailed below, we want to hear from you!The Structural Lab Technician works as a project team member within our growing Structural Testing and Instrumentation group. The individual works in the laboratory and in the field assembling structural load tests, setting up and using data acquisition systems, installing electronic instrumentation, and performing field investigations using non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment and removing material samples in order to assist in diagnosing problems and developing solutions in the construction, engineering, and architecture industry. This person works under the general supervision of a Specialist or Project Manager and completes routine and moderately complex testing and field assignments independently.Responsibilities: 

  • Perform laboratory and/or field structural testing
  • Accurately record and organize data for analysis, while exercising good judgment in assessing the reasonableness of test results
  • Occasionally travel locally to perform on-site testing; prepare and log samples from field testing
  • Assume responsibility for key aspects of laboratory safety, maintenance, and quality assurance, including setting up, operating, and maintaining laboratory instruments; cleaning laboratory spaces; restocking laboratory supplies; and assisting with quality assurance programs
  • Interface with project teams and disciplines across the company, managing workflow on multiple, concurrent projects

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in a related field, or high school diploma plus the equivalent of four years of relevant work experience
  • Hands-on capabilities with experience in electronic, construction, and/or applicable mechanical trades
  • Developed understanding with the ability to follow instructions for routine tests
  • Detail-oriented with effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer knowledge

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Appropriate certifications and training for primary practice areas (may include AutoCAD, ACI field training and lab certification, ASNT level II or III, UT certification, MT certification, instrumentation installation and problem-solving, and strain gauge understanding)
  • ACI Field Testing and Laboratory Testing certifications 
  • Structural testing experience 
  • Experience with a procedural and process-oriented structure
  • Mathematics skills up through and including Algebra and Geometry
  • Most work will be completed in WJE’s Janney Technical Center, though some travel to support field assignments may be required.

    Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computers, printers, faxes, copiers, telephones, voicemail systems, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

    • Ability to perform inspections of bridges and other structures, both visually and with instruments
    • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors
    • Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screens
    • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
    • Ability to safely work at heights and use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment
    • Ability to safely use and/or operate various construction power tools
    • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards
    • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations
    • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
    • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

      Annual starting base salary (gross): $56,800 - $82,300. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on several factors including consideration for a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
