  Job TitleSTAFF ENGINEERLocationPlymouth, MichiganJob TypeFull-timeEducationBachelor's DegreeDegree/ MajorCivil EngineeringYears Related Experience0-1 yearCertification/ Registration RequiredJob DescriptionSME is seeking a Staff Engineer for a regular, full-time position with our Geotechnical Services group in our Plymouth, Michigan office. Description of Position ResponsibilitiesWork with a highly motivated and high performing team coordinating geotechnical engineering evaluations including coordination with clients, subcontractors, and other SME team members in Plymouth and other offices. You will gain exposure to a wide variety of geotechnical and geodynamic engineering projects performing field-related reconnaissance, soil sampling/testing, structure condition assessments, and seismic/vibration monitoring during and prior to construction projects. Most tasks consist primarily of field-related duties with minimum supervision, and working outside of the office approximately 80 percent of the time. Perform field activities including staking boring locations, coordination of public and private utilities, infiltration testing, electrical resistivity testing, pressuremeter testing, setup and maintaining portable seismographs, and field coordination with client's local representatives. Perform laboratory tests on, and visual classification of, soil samples. Collaborate with senior level engineers to develop a scope of geotechnical services for upcoming projects. Prepare project set-up documents at the beginning of a project, track project milestones, and assist with achieving deliverables on or ahead of schedule. Write geotechnical proposals and engineering reports. Assist senior engineers with solving geotechnical problems in a practical and efficient manner.Technical Skills RequiredAn entry-level position requiring an introduction to geotechnical engineering through college coursework, general ability to classify soils, and proficient with basic Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel.A clean driving record and experience driving in the U.S. The ability to lift 50+ pounds, stand for long periods of time, work from heights and tight spaces, and work in inclement weather. Ability to work overtime on an as needed basis Preferred Behavioral Traits• Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, and able to follow up ahead of deadlines. • Self-starter and constructive team-player with a passion for helping others, and getting to the heart of the problem • Authentic communicator with soft skills to build relationshipsSME is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
