SMEC is a professional services firm with Australian origins and a global footprint that provides high-quality consultancy services on major infrastructure projects. SMEC has over 5,300 employees and an established network of more than 75 offices in Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and North and South America. 

SMEC provides consultancy services for the lifecycle of a project, to a broad range of sectors. These are: Transport; Water; Environment; Geotechnics and Tunnels; Urban Development; Hydropower and Energy; Government and Advisory Services; Social Development; and Resources. 

SMEC’s consultancy services include: pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, field investigations, laboratory testing, computer modelling, detailed design, tender and contract management, asset management, construction supervision, quality assurance, commissioning, operation and maintenance, training, and project management. 

SMEC has been ranked in the Top 100 of Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Top 225 International Design Firms for the past 15 years. In 2014, SMEC was ranked at Number 57 in the Top 225 International Design Firms and Number 76 in the Top Global Design Firms. In ENR's 2012 'Top Ten by Market' List for Water, SMEC ranked at number nine. SMEC was also awarded the 2010 BRW ANZ Private Business Award for ‘Most Successful Private Business Trading Overseas – Asia’. 

SMEC has won multiple industry awards for excellence. In 2014, SMEC won the gold award (Client Focus category) at the Consult Australia Awards for Excellence for the Mid West Ports Authority Asset Condition Assessment; the Minerals, Energy and Related Services Award at the Governor of Victoria Export Awards; and the Projects Under R50 Million category at the Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) Aon Engineering Excellence Awards for the Isando Pedestrian Bridge (the 'Walking Wonder'). The SMEC Foundation also received an Outstanding Achievement award in the 2014 Australian Charity Awards.

Over the past 16 years, SMEC has grown from 200 to more than 5,300 people. Since 2007, SMEC has achieved a steady annual growth. This growth is attributed to SMEC’s reputation for technical excellence, innovative problem solving and SMEC’s ability to address the needs of clients and staff in diverse locations. SMEC leverages its reputation and geographic footprint by investing in local operations and training local talent. 

SMEC works closely with clients to deliver cost-effective practical project outcomes. SMEC’s Australian and international clients include local and multi-national contractors, government departments, statutory bodies, private sector organisations, utility providers and International Financial Institutions (IFIs), responsible for funding and coordinating major infrastructure projects.
