State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS) is currently recruiting for a Transportation Engineer III in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.Nature of Work: This position is a journey-level Transportation Engineer III on the Signal System Operations Team within the Traffic Development and Support Division (TDSD). The position serves as a technical specialist for traffic signal timing reviews and operational analyses.  The engineer completes assigned signal timing projects, applies established traffic engineering principles and standards, and uses industry-standard traffic analysis and simulation software to evaluate and improve signal system performance.The position supports OOTS and SHA District Traffic Offices by providing technical analysis and recommendations related to traffic signal operations, timing modifications, active performance monitoring, and implementation of Adaptive Traffic Signal Control Technology (ASCT).  The engineer coordinates with consultants, signal technicians, and other SHA divisions, responds to operational concerns and citizen complaints, and prepares technical documentation and recommendations for supervisory review.MDOT offers a generous and competitive benefits package. Qualifications

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years experience in professional engineering. One (1) year experience in traffic signal timing and operations.

Notes:
1.  Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
2.  Possession of a Master's Degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
3.  Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing or reviewing traffic signal timing plans using signal timing software such as SYNCHRO, VISSIM, or similar traffic analysis tools.
  • Experience analyzing traffic signal performance measures (SPMs) or signal analytics data to evaluate corridor performance. 
  • Experience conducting traffic operational studies or signal retiming projects.
  • Experience evaluating or supporting Adaptive Signal Control Technology (ASCT) or other intelligent transportation systems.
  • Experience coordinating with district traffic offices, signal technicians, consultants, or local agencies on signal timing or operational issues.
  • Knowledge of MDOT SHA policies, FHWA guidance, MUTCD/MdMUTCD, AASHTO, and ITE practices related to traffic signal operations.
  • Experience conducting field reviews of signalized intersections and corridor operations.
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills.


Licenses & Certifications

 
Candidate must possess a driver's license valid in the state of Maryland.
