This OpportunityWSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Early Career Structural Engineer for our Portland, ME office.Our A/E team is a multi-disciplinary science/engineering/architecture team of 150+ staff, located in one of the most livable cities in the US. WSP offers the technical challenges of projects located throughout the US and globally within the relaxed environment of a small, vibrant city.The role of the Early Career Structural Engineer is to work within multidisciplinary teams of engineers, and designers on building projects with an emphasis on engineering. As an Early Career structural engineer, you will be working on specific engineering design and analysis tasks under the supervision of a senior structural engineer. The nature and progression of the assignments and the level of responsibilities will depend on your performance and willingness to grow. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are expected. Ability to self-direct and to independently research technical solutions are encouraged.  This is a great opportunity to grow your career by working on structural projects within a multi-discipline project team environment. Project types generally include studies, upgrades, renovations, and new construction for federal, state, and private-sector clients.  Recent and ongoing projects include highly secure radar facilities; state building renovations; industrial facilities; industrial office space, warehouses, and maintenance facilities; water/wastewater infrastructure; and development of design standards for federal agencies. The position will primarily work in an office/home office setting but may require travel to client facilities.Your Impact

  • Assist with performing basic professional structural engineering work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, building, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Key ResponsibilitiesUnder general supervision from senior engineers, your responsibilities include:

  • Developing structural models to solve engineering problems based on sound engineering principles.
  • Analyzing new and existing structures per required code.
  • Assisting in production work as required with Revit and or Autocad
  • Developing calculation packages as required.
  • Performing site visits of existing structures to document existing conditions of structural components, assist in evaluating their capacity and ability to resist new loading requirements, and in producing technical reports with technically sound recommendations.
  • Being able to use engineering fundamentals to solve seemingly complex problems.

Who You AreRequired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.  
  • Familiarity with relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
