THE RECONSIDERATION PERIOD FOR THIS RECRUITMENT IS THREE (3) BUSINESS DAYS RECRUITMENT: The State Highway Administration (SHA) Office of Structures is recruiting for two (2) Bridge Inspectors (Transportation Engineering Technician I). One vacancy currently exists in the Eastern Shore region (Allegany, Garrett, and Washington Counties) and the other is located in Western Maryland region (Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties).  This is an Interview and Hire position that is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below for this position.
This announcement may also be used for future SHA vacancies throughout the state of Maryland.  If you indicated veteran status on your application, you must submit your DD-214 along with the completed DTS-1 (application). Nature of Work: In compliance with federal requirements that all bridges be inspected on at least a two (2) year cycle, the bridge inspection team is directly responsible for the inspection of all state-owned bridges and structures.  This includes movable bridges, box culverts, pipes, bulkheads, retaining walls and other miscellaneous structures on the Maryland State Highway System.  The number of structures totals over 6,000 and has a dollar value in the billions with a yearly repair budget of approximately $16 million dollars.  This position will assist the team leader and team members to uniformly inspect all assigned structures on the state highway network.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
EDUCATION: 
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.  
 
EXPERIENCE:  None.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidates must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.   

Additional Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates must be able to be reached by a phone.
  • Candidates must be able to work weekends and nights.
  • Successful candidates will be required to attend a (2) two-week certification course for the Condition Inspection of In-Service Bridges.
  • Candidates must be able to climb slopes, traverse rugged terrain around bridges, and enter pipes and box culverts.
  • Candidates must be willing to work on elevated platforms, bucket trucks, and under bridge aerial cranes
