Job Description

Bring your problem-solving mindset, entrepreneurial spirit, and established expertise to Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE). WJE's Materials Laboratory based in Austin, Texas, is seeking an ownership-level, Experienced Concrete Materials Engineer, to join our team of industry-leading experts in solving some of the most challenging problems in the built world. At WJE, you will apply a principles-first, problem-solving approach to determine root causes of problems, characterize existing materials, develop and specify new materials, and evaluate performance and durability for a variety of applications across the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.In addition to collaborating with local architectural, civil, and structural engineers, this position will partner closely with our laboratory teams in WJE's Janney Technical Center (JTC), as well as multi-disciplinary projects teams company-wide. Responsibilities:

  • Technical project execution, including performing and training others in hands-on field investigation and laboratory testing; interpreting analytical data and reports; researching historical background of various materials, technical issues, and code requirements; applying sound engineering judgment for the development of innovative yet practical solutions and recommendations; preparing technically excellent client deliverables; and providing high-quality reviews of work by others 
  • Project management, including client development, project scoping, assembling and managing appropriate project teams, maintaining project schedules and budgets, and managing client expectations and deliverables
  • Laboratory management, including developing and implementing specialized laboratory testing programs and assuming responsibility for key aspects of laboratory safety, operations, maintenance, quality assurance, and accreditations
  • Collaboration with interdisciplinary project teams, including providing expertise to internal and external clients for a variety of new and existing construction materials applications (e.g., concrete materials, historic masonry; pavement)
  • Contributions to company-wide objectives through mentoring, participation in office and company development initiatives, participation with in-house Technical Resource Groups (TRGs), conducting in-house research, involvement in professional organizations, and business development to attract new and repeat clients

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Texas or ability to obtain by comity
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in civil, structural, or materials science engineering, with an emphasis on construction materials
  • Minimum eight years of relevant industry laboratory experience; pavement engineering experience preferred
  • Effective technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated competence in transitioning quickly between multiple priorities while maintaining effective coworker and client relationships

Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computer, printer, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to attend meetings at various office, field, and construction sites
  • Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors
  • Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screens
  • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to safely work at heights
  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment (with training)
  • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction site hazards
  • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations
  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

Actual salaries will vary and will be based on several factors including consideration for a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
