Job Description

SENIOR FIELD MECHANICAL ENGINEER (HYDRO) – MODESTO, CA 

  • As a Senior Mechanical Field Engineer, your primary role will be to support project execution as a project technical lead, project engineer and discipline engineer for a variety of hydroelectric projects located throughout California.
  • You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification for engineered systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards/practices.
  • This position does NOT require relocation to California and would come with a per diem and/or travel package.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and manage projects working with a multi-discipline group of engineers and technicians providing technical services to public and private sector clients including design work, field work and project management activities.
  • Perform site visits to provide technical expertise and recommendations on equipment and facility upgrades, modifications and rehabilitation projects.
  • Perform condition assessment of power plant mechanical equipment, including Francis and/or Kaplan hydro turbines at the customer site.
  • Perform risk assessment, ranking and life cycle costing of mechanical equipment replacement, repair, and rehabilitation.
  • Advise on procurement, analysis and design of hydro-mechanical systems including Francis/Kaplan hydraulic turbines, speed governing systems, turbine shut-off valves, mechanical balance of plant equipment, synchronous generators, all types of gates and operators, trash racks, bulkheads, overhead cranes and other related systems.
  • Preparation of construction plans and specifications.
  • Manage technical aspects of projects and interact with clients on existing and potential projects and support marketing.
  • Independently provide mechanical engineering for various hydro projects.
  • Develop and provide project and budget planning and project time management for various projects
  • Provide engineering services and advice on the design, manufacture and installation of turbine components for plant construction, upgrades or repairs
  • Provide mechanical engineering for development of new hydroelectric projects and rehabilitation of existing hydroelectric facilities including: gates and hoisting systems for water control structures such as dams, spillways, intakes and outlets, pipelines, penstocks; hydraulic turbines; speed governing systems.
  • Verification of compliance with the contractual technical requirements of documentation produced by suppliers such as drawings, calculation notes, manufacturing procedures, purchase specifications, assembly procedures, etc;
  • Completion of engineering projects to modernize components, replace plumbing systems, engineering to repair major parts of components, analysis of power increase, etc.;
  • Identifying business opportunities in the field with a focus on the US.
  • Provide hydraulic turbine selection, cost estimating, equipment layout and coordination with other engineering disciplines during preliminary feasibility studies and preliminary and final design.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in powerhouse equipment (design/ testing/ commissioning) including Francis and/or Kaplan hydro turbines, governing systems, gates and hoists, trash racks, bulkheads, overhead cranes etc.
  • Hydro engineering experience for hydroelectric power plants and water control structures specifically dams, spillways, intakes, and outlets.
  • Hydro rehabilitation experience including upgrade planning and design for existing hydros.
  • Experience in providing mechanical support for hydroelectric planning / development of planning reports.
  • Experience in project reports, budget and schedule management and client interaction such as client presentations, scoping, and marketing.
  • Experience with preparation of proposals.
  • Demonstrated strength in written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of power plant Health and Safety requirements and PPE.
  • Knowledge of power plant equipment costs, manufacturing lead time and sourcing.
  • Experience with risk assessment, ranking of alternative, life cycles cost of mechanical equipment.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical engineering
  • 5-15 years of progressive experience on hydroelectric projects and in hydro-mechanical equipment.
  • PE preferred but not required
