Job Description

  Geosyntec is seeking an Environmental Technician to join our team in Columbia, Maryland. The role is ideal for individuals interested in building a career in the environmental construction and consulting field. You will perform a variety of multi-media sampling efforts; monitor environmental and remediation construction projects; and provide field and office support to geologists and engineers for a diverse private and public-sector client base. The ability and willingness to work outdoors, perform extensive fieldwork, and travel for extensive periods of time, including overnights, weekends, and holidays is required.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform multi-media sampling in support of investigations, monitoring programs, and other data collection centric projects;
  • Provide construction quality assurance monitoring and inspection on construction and/or investigation and monitoring activities;
  • Monitor and oversee drilling and well construction activities in support of environmental and geotechnical investigations or monitoring projects;
  • Prepare daily and weekly field reports, construction schedules & progress reports;
  • Assist in the preparation of the final data packages and construction reports, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices;
  • Interact with project personnel (contractors, project managers, engineers & clients) and assist in cultivating an integrated team approach through open lines of communications and participation;
  • Observe and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the site-specific project health and safety plans and the company’s Environmental Health and Safety Management policies and procedures; and
  • Perform tasks in other company practice areas including general construction contractor oversight, or construction quality assurance activities, as needed.

  • Training: This position requires OSHA HAZWOPER, first aid, and CPR training and medical monitoring, which will be paid for by the firm. We also offer professional and technical development opportunities including in-house seminars, webinars, and mentoring, that allow our staff to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful consultants.
  • Fieldwork: Up to 90%
  • Overnight travel: Up to 90%

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED). (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, environmental science, environmental engineering, or related field (strongly preferred)

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word software programs. (required)
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, compute rate, ratio, percent, and draw and interpret bar graphs. (required)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, and strong work ethic. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)
  • Experience with the operation of industry-typical monitoring and data collection equipment, including but not limited to laptop and handheld computers, multi-parameter water quality instruments, pumps, water level indicators, photoionization detectors, flame ionization detectors, Troxler moisture /density gauges, landfill gas detectors, and other equipment. (preferred)
  • Experience with multi-media sampling including soil, low-flow groundwater sampling, and air. (preferred)
  • Experience will different drilling techniques including direct push, hollow stem auger, air rotary, and sonic. (preferred)
  • Technical experience in construction services, geotechnical, environmental, or related engineering disciplines. (preferred)
  • Experience ensuring field activities comply with work plans, quality assurance project plans, construction plans and specifications and the ability to monitor several different types of activities simultaneously. (preferred)
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, including survey and topographical drawings/maps. (preferred)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation, for business travel. (required)
