Description
GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist 2 provide project management support for environmental consulting projects. Subject projects will be primarily related to the energy industry (e.g., natural gas transmission, renewable energy, and electric transmission projects). Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse. The successful candidate’s primary work responsibilities will be to provide task management support to Project Managers for the development of related reports, agency consultations, permit applications, and project tracking. The position includes assessment of environmental impacts for siting, permitting/regulatory, and reporting efforts related to environmental and cultural resource considerations. The position requires a strong skillset and ability to mentor and direct staff, communicate effectively, and work in a collaborative team atmosphere to ensure successful and on-schedule project delivery.This position will be in GAI’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or Charleston, West Virginia office with a flexible hybrid schedule. Other office locations and/or remote locations will also be considered. This opportunity is for a mid-level professional looking to advance their career.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Coordination of environmental resource investigations (e.g., wetland and stream delineations and endangered species and cultural resource surveys).
- Completion of the environmental reporting, permitting, and other regulatory aspects related to the Clean Water Act, Endangered and Threatened Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and National Environmental Protection Act (among other Federal, state, and local requirements).
- Management of project tasks including budgets, scheduling, and general project execution and delivery.
- Track and communicate progress toward project milestones, budgetary constraints, and other performance metrics. Will work closely and in concert with the Project Manager.
- Manage agency consultations and coordination (both written and verbal).
- Client communications.
- Build strong and trusted relationships with clients and/or review agencies.
- Strong technical writing ability.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Must be able to travel.
- Travel will predominantly be regional day trips, however overnight stays will at times be necessary.
- Travel (mostly limited to the Northeast) is likely to occur monthly and include client visits, project site visits, and meeting attendance.
- Travel will occur throughout the year up to 15% but can vary based on Client needs and project types.
- Manage implementation and compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
- Enthusiasm, initiative, and flexibility with working on multiple projects and clients.

Technical ResponsibilitiesShows progress towards leading field studies and data collection; Generates well written, technically sound documents with little assistance from senior staff and requiring minor edits; Agency interface; Data analysis and interpretation; Acquires ability to research Federal, State, and local applicable environmental regulations and guidance and applies them to project specifics; extensive knowledge of wetland delineations; wetland restoration and wetland design; ecological field surveys; endangered species surveys (understand the requirements of the endangered species act, understand when and how to consult with these agencies, and have working knowledge of the species within the area we work), and duties as required; May become specialized within a specific discipline; receives technical training for career enhancement. If assigned as direct supervisor manage and lead employees; Mentor and motivate; Communicate (including listening); Be available to employees; regular performance feedback; Enforce GAI policy and disseminate internal announcements; Foster teamwork and provide regular overall feedback to staff members.
Project and Task ManagementWorks as a part of a team and coordinates work with others. Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.
Management ResponsibilityAssigning and overseeing tasks under the direct supervision of the task manager and maintaining budgets and schedules; keeping very close communication with Task Managers; assisting Project Managers or Task Manager with proposal preparation; scopes of work and project component cost estimates. Guidance and oversight from Task Managers and Project Managers. If assigned as a direct supervisor receives guidance and oversight from Business Managers and/or experts in specific environmental areas.
Communication SkillsPossess effective oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staffs; interact with clients with close oversight, interacts closely with Project Managers and various Department Managerial Staff, performs well with client communications. If assigned as direct supervisor, communication (focusing on listening) skills; interacts with employees and various managerial staff regarding employee performance, hiring, coordination with HR on performance issues of staff, merit increases, etc.; Keep employees informed of company news and policy changes.
