Job Description

Overview

NV5 is growing our Water Resources Team in Southern California with the addition of an entry level Stormwater/Environmental Specialist. This position provides an opportunity to develop monitoring and reporting skills to support important water quality, sediment, and stormwater compliance monitoring projects in Southern California. The selected candidate will work with a broad range of scientists, GIS experts, engineers, and planners that are focused on solving complex water quality and regulatory issues. Relative to the candidate’s degree and/or number of years of experience, the ideal candidate will assist with the execution water quality monitoring and assessment projects and Jurisdictional compliance programs for NV5’s Municipal clients. The selected candidate will work under supervision of a Senior Consultant and collaborate with professionals in water quality monitoring and assessment, hydrology, stormwater planning and program management.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting private and municipal clientele with stormwater permit compliance projects
  • Field work including performing field observations, sampling, monitoring equipment installations, and operations and maintenance
  • Anticipated 80% field work, 20% office work.
  • Preparing Sampling and Analysis Plans, Quality Assurance Program Plans, and Site Health and Safety Plans
  • Flow and analytical data QA/QC, formatting, analysis, and graphing using MS Excel and other software tools
  • Data evaluation and report writing
  • Frequent contact with clients, regulatory agencies and outside contractors
  • Preparing Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) for Industrial and Construction Permit Projects
  • Performing monthly compliance field inspections at industrial sites, performing Best Management Practices (BMP) inspections, and providing corrective action reports.
  • Management and data entry of facility information into state database systems such as SMARTS, CIWQS, and CEDEN
  • Participation at local association meetings, regulatory meetings, and relevant California Stormwater Quality Association subcommittees/conferences

Qualifications

Candidates should have:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science (or similar degree)
  • 0-5 years of relevant experience in the Southern California Stormwater Industry
  • Certification (within first year of employment) with either CPSWQ, CPESC, CESSWI and QISP, QSD/P
  • Knowledge of the Construction General Stormwater Permit, Industrial General Stormwater Permit, or Municipal Phase I or II Stormwater/NPDES Permits
  • Working knowledge of local water quality and storm water regulations, Basin Plans, standards, pollutant drivers, TMDLs, associated programmatic efforts to comply with regulations, and water quality data interpretation and management
  • Demonstrated experience with water quality studies
  • Strong data management skills (Excel, Word, other programs)
  • Ability to multi-task and manage a variety of project activities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective technical writing skills
  • A collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit

The position will be located in our Carlsbad office and requires periodic local travel for inspections and field work. The pay range for this California position is $65,000.00- $85,000.00 per year; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. This information is provided per California Senate Bill 1162. Base pay information is based on market location.
