Job Description

The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) position/function only. All interested persons will need to re-apply for any future recruitment conducted of this classification.The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. We are committed to quality and excellence in customer service, and we rely on our organization's values, traditions, and – most importantly – our employees to achieve these goals.Nature of Work:  This position functions as an expert level Traffic Engineer assisting in the development and management of the roadway safety program, maintaining crash data records, and completing safety evaluations. This position assists with the development of work requests related to signing and pavement marking. This position performs expert-level duties requiring the application of traffic engineering theories, principles, and standards to a variety of tasks and projects. Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Conduct and manage various traffic studies from initiation to completion;
  • Develop and submit work requests, and perform in-house design, in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (and other applicable standards and guidelines) for changes to traffic control devices;
  • Complete field reviews of existing conditions and as needed to support construction activities;
  • Assist in reviewing and coordinating consultant support and associated deliverables relating to traffic engineering and/or traffic control devices;
  • Submit routine requests to law enforcement and other transportation agencies for crash data, and management of crash data for MDTA facilities in Geographic Information Systems (GIS);
  • Assist the Traffic Discipline Manager with development of, and updates to, standards, specifications, guidelines, and policies relating to traffic engineering; and
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a timely manner and assisting with traffic engineering support during emergency events.

 The employee in this position will work directly under the Senior Traffic Design Engineer and/or Discipline Manager. The current vacancy exists in Baltimore, MD.  Hybrid telework schedules may be available for this position.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
 
Experience: Five years’ experience in professional engineering. ** Two years of this experience must include conducting traffic studies and performing traffic control device design. **SELECTIVE QUALIFICATION recruitments are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (knowledge, skills, and abilities). No substitutions are allowed for a Selective Qualification.  The Ideal candidate will possess: 

  • Experience responding to customer inquires relating to traffic control operations.

 Notes:
 1.  Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
 2.  Possession of a Master's Degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
 3.  Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a State with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements. Your placement on an eligible list may be based solely on the contents of your application; therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information. Please include all relevant experience on your application.  This includes but is not limited to full or part-time, volunteer, military, acting capacity, or any other relevant experience to the position you are applying for.

Licenses & Certifications


 1.  Employees in this class may be required to possess a Professional Engineer, Land Surveyor or Property Line Surveyor License.
 2.  Applicants must possess a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.
