This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below.  This is a position specific recruitment. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.Job Duties:  This is a Team Leader position that serves as an expert, managing OMT’s Field Explorations Division’s drilling crews. The main purpose of this position is to provide leadership and manage subsurface investigation projects for statewide drilling operations. This position will also provide direction and guidance to the drilling team office and field quality control personnel, drilling technicians, and geotechnical drilling contractor inspectors. This position also develops strategic planning for future improvements, introduces innovative subsurface investigation and drilling techniques, and develops training modules within the drilling team portion of the division. The position conducts systematic research and studies to develop strategic plans for drilling operations and collected data review process. It also oversees the development of electronic data collection systems by establishing a correlation between traditional subsurface investigation techniques and advanced geotechnical and geophysical data collection systems. This position also provides guidance to subsurface drilling technicians to optimize productivity and efficiency by collecting electronic subsurface boring data while the drilling operation is in progress. The Geotechnical Drilling Team Leader is responsible for preparing, reviewing, updating, and endorsing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for subsurface exploration practices, project site exploration surveys, and field operation procedures, including on-site drilling inspection reports, data quality control, and data management.      MDOT offers a generous and competitive benefits package. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
 Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
 
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in professional engineering.
 
Selective Qualifications: Two and a half (2.5) years of the required experience must have involved in subsurface drilling and/or geotechnical data processing; and geophysical data collection using Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR).
  
*This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification.  Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires a specific or additional bona fide occupational qualification (i.e. knowledge, skill or ability).  No substitutions are allowed for a selective qualification. Preferred Qualifications:The ideal candidate should have experience in one or more of the following: 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to use computer skills to manage field data
  • Proficient in GIS and databases analyses
  • Knowledge of Ground-penetrating Radar (GPR) to collect data, review the collected data and images for accuracy and identifying subsurface anomalies, and roadway pavement thicknesses
  • Ability to conduct research in geotechnical and geophysical data collection
  • Knowledge of writing subsurface investigation reports


Notes:1.  Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.2.  Possession of a master's degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.3.  Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the state of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland.
