We are seeking a full-time Assistant Geotechnical Engineer with 2-4 years of experience in the field, to support our Geotechnical Engineering Team in our New York City office in Lower Manhattan. NV5’s New York City office operates on a four-day work week, hybrid work schedule. Our Geotechnical Engineering Division specializes in providing subsurface investigations, support of excavation, foundation design, and geotechnical analysis to support clients on infrastructure and structures. This individual will have a key role in a broad range of projects for both our municipal and private sector clients.
Responsibilities
Prospective applicants shall have practical experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Providing geotechnical oversight and logging of geotechnical explorations (borings, test pits, CPTs);
- Developing laboratory and field testing programs;
- Preparing engineering analyses for slope stability, settlement and consolidation estimates, deep foundation design (compressive, uplift, and lateral capacities), mat foundation design, ground surcharging, and soil liquefaction;
- Preparing engineering reports, including the evaluation of collected field and laboratory results, preparation of figures and drawings;
- Providing field oversight for Special Inspection during construction for subgrade inspection, controlled filling and in-place density testing, deep foundation installation (driven/drilled piles). Underpinning and Support of Excavation (SOE) experience a plus. Experience with other construction-related Special Inspections (steel, concrete) and additional certifications (NICET, ACI) are also a plus.
Qualifications
- A Baccalaureate degree in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, and/or a related field
- A Master’s Degree with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering is a plus
- Knowledge of AutoCAD is required
- Familiarity with NYC and IBC-based building codes is a plus
- Applicants with OSHA 10-hr or 40-hour HAZWOPER training a plus.
- Knowledge and experience using geotechnical analysis programs, such as gINT, APile, LPile, GRL WEAP, Slide2, CT Shoring Suite, PLAXIS, Shake 2000, and other advanced modelling programs a plus.
- EIT is preferred

Applicants may be required travel to work sites in NYC, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and Albany/Capitol District, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Field assignments are generally expected to be during regular construction hours (7a-3p), with the possibility of occasional shift changes for evening, overnight, and/or weekend work. The pay range for this position in New York City is $70,000.00 to $85,000.00 per year; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate.
