Job Description

  DescriptionEarthcare Bethel, LLC, an affiliated business partner of Barton & Loguidice is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Facility Operations Manager for its organics carbonization and biochar production facility located in the Bethel, PA. We are seeking a candidate with experience and knowledge managing all aspects of facility operations, including but not limited to organics pre and post processing, daily material processing, supervision of employees, maintaining safety standards, and compliance with environmental and governmental regulations.
This position will assist the Operations Director with overseeing all aspects of the organics processing and biochar product facility located in Bethel Twp., Berks County. This facility processes waste organics streams, dries them and thermally processes them into biochar products. The Biochar Facility Operations Manager may also assist with maintaining compliance with environmental regulatory standards and interacting with regulatory bodies, including PADEP, the Township, Federal EPA and other regulatory bodies. This position will provide support to the Director of Operations, Management and Ownership of Earthcare, and may be given additional tasks, projects, and responsibilities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:Oversee all aspects of pre- and post- processing of organic material delivered to the facility.

  • Managing company employees and resources throughout the entire processing cycle, from receiving material to final sale and delivery to customers;
  • Manage daily processes by monitoring and reporting the status of key services, safety, and equipment;
  • Maintain compliance with facility permits including, but not limited to, PADEP solid waste, NPDES and air permits, and applicable Local, State and Federal regulations;
  • Interact with Earthcare management and maintain knowledge of Earthcare/hauler contract requirements;
  • Ensure product quality programs are followed and processing standards are met;
  • Achieve productivity and throughput standards through staff training and process planning;
  • Oversee operational staff for the biochar facility;
  • Interface and planning with Earthcare management to schedule operators/laborers;
  • Coordinating staffing needs such as hiring, training, and coaching employees via the third-party staffing company;
  • Monitor and report inbound/outbound tonnages and inventories;
  • Assist with sales and marketing initiatives related to biochar products;
  • Implement company guidelines and initiatives with team members;
  • Ensuring, implementing and following all safety principles and precautions applicable to onsite operations; and
  • Obtain and maintain PA Dept of Agriculture Weighmaster Certification (cost of obtaining and maintaining certification will be covered by Earthcare Bethel).

  • Associates, Bachelor’s or Technical degree in Agricultural, Business, Economics, Engineering, Environmental Science, Soil Sciences/Agronomy, or other closely related management, STEM or business studies or 5+ years of prior work experience in a related field.

Experience / Knowledge:

  • 2+ years of experience in the waste industry, composting / organics industry, or other related field.
  • 2+ years of experience with management / supervision.

Physical Requirements:

  • Climb up and down compost piles frequently and travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces at the facility.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
  • Work at heights greater than ten feet.
  • Ability to lift 50 + pounds.

Position is located at a recycling/transfer station that processes recyclable materials including chicken litter, spent microbial cake, woody materials and other organics, which generates outside noise and air borne particles.
