Job Description

  DescriptionYour role at GEI.GEI’s Washington DC office continues to grow and is seeking a Geotechnical Instrumentation Engineer to join our Practice within the DC Metropolitan area and the surrounding areas of Virginia and Maryland.We are seeking an engineer with experience in the design, installation, and maintenance of geotechnical instrumentation systems. These systems will include monitoring using automated total stations, inclinometers, vibrating wire piezometers, and borehole extensometers.The selected candidate will be supported by our full instrumentation team and by senior professional engineers. Construction projects will include foundations, tunneling, excavations support systems, ground improvement, and environmental work.Essential Responsibilities & DutiesKey responsibilities include designing, installing, and maintaining instrumentation systems; collecting and interpreting monitoring data; and preparing reports. Other responsibilities include:

  • Installing inclinometers, extensometers, vibrating wire piezometers, observation wells and seismographs
  • Monitoring a variety of equipment (optical targets/prisms, vibration monitors, strain gauges, tiltmeters, crack monitors, vibrating wire piezometers, inclinometers, etc.).
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation equipment
  • Preparing instrumentation/monitoring proposals and cost estimates based on contract drawings and agency requirements
  • Preparing monitoring plans for submission to regulatory agencies to monitor construction
  • Traveling to project sites as required including occasional over-night stays

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent; other technical training is acceptable.
  • 3+ years of experience is preferred
  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation equipment
  • Experience wiring, soldering, and cabling electrical system and fabricating using metal
  • Computer-programming experience is preferred
  • Surveying experience is preferred
  • Excellent writing and general communication skills
  • Construction observation/management experience is a plus
  • 40-hr OSHA/HAZWOPER training is a plus
  • Ability to perform field work
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license
