Job Description

DescriptionThis position will be responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the Civil/Structural section and resources within the California (CAL) Transmission & Civil/Structural Department in our Transmission & Distribution (T&D) global practice. This includes supporting and executing business strategy, developing high performance teams, and promoting the Burns & McDonnell culture, values, and mission. The Section Manager will lead the section in a dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell’s core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service. Along with the duties below, this position will continue to include Civil / Structural engineering assignments. Duties/responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the department; direct and coordinate work assignments and review performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
  • Responsible for fostering a healthy, vibrant, and inclusive employee-owner culture within the team through the leverage of sound team building practices, the promotion and administration of effective conflict resolutions, the promotion of ownership mentality, a healthy work-life balance and community engagement.
  • Advocate for staff by meeting regularly, listening to their short- and long-term goals and providing guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.
  • Recruitment, development, training, and retention of Civil/Structural staff. Including supporting the early careers recruiting teams to drive efforts at colleges and universities in the Southwest and supporting the CAL T&D internship program.
  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluation for Civil/Structural department staff (90-day appraisals, mid-year reviews, annual performance appraisals, coaching sessions, etc.)
  • Responsible for interpreting policies, purposes, and goals of the organization to staff.
  • Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvements.
  • Provide expert level technical, design guidance and support.
  • Identify training needs for the department and support/develop training programs. Collaborate with other departments on shared training.
  • Responsible for profitable growth of the section; ensuring staff levels, staff loading, and staff assignments meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.
  • Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance
  • Manage department budget and expenditure of funds.
  • Support Department Manager in preparing and presenting section workload and monthly financial reports to global practice or regional management and applicable project managers.
  • Implement, apply, and support company, global practice and/or regional office programs and initiatives; successfully navigating and managing change within the section.
  • Responsible for collaborating with business development managers, business line leads, project managers and proposal production staff on proposals to secure work for staff.
  • Build strong partnerships with Kansas City and other regional office teams, including the Burns & McDonnell India Team.
  • Responsible for overall QA/QC process adherence
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Responsible for diversity initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or related field from an ABET accredited program.
  • Minimum 5 years related professional experience.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management and clients.
  • Position requires the ability to influence, lead and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Professional Engineering licensure preferred.
  • Previous leadership and/or management experience preferred.
  • Previous consulting experience preferred.
