Our diverse and skilled teams are engaged in major projects across Transport, Water, Energy and renewables sectors.The RoleWe’re seeking to engage a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Sydney / Cooma on our Snowy Hydro Project. In this role, you’ll provide expert technical and Project Management skills to support the ongoing activities of a leading multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, contributing to managing a variety of divergent activities (within a discipline), providing technical expertise, contributing to the strategic direction and providing supervision and leadership to employees within the discipline. You’ll be responsible for the review of key projects being delivered, development of concept designs in conjunction with the team as required and contributing to targeting and securing new workResponsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Communicating effectively and regularly with the appropriate contributors and stakeholders
- Encouraging and assisting others to build strong internal and external networks and relationships
- Ensuring that company objectives, policies and procedures are adhered to by coordinating the establishment of discipline-specific practices
- Forecasting workloads and ensuring necessary material and human resources to meet project deliverables
- Forming alliances with appropriate professionals and specialists within the organisation to achieve agreed outcomes and develop broader knowledge
- Proactively liaising with other design disciplines as required by the agreed role on the project to develop and maintain design co-ordination
- Proactively sharing knowledge to provide technical development and mentoring to the team
- Providing significant informal supervision, leadership, mentoring and coaching of more junior staff
- Seeking and considering the opinions of others as is appropriate to the situation
- Undertaking a leadership role within the team in collaboration with Manager / Team Leader
- Coaching colleagues to develop, apply, test and evaluate new designs, concepts and solutions
- Ensuring that all tasks are undertaken in accordance with SMEC’s Quality Assurance (QA), Environmental Management Service (EMS) and OH&S
- Monitoring the interaction of various disciplines and providing specialist knowledge where required
- Overseeing the development of functional specifications that meet the client requirements
- Proposing alternative solutions where established systems are unable to overcome project problems
- Providing advice where the concept proposal has nonstandard engineering requirements
- Supervising the review of complex design to ensure the clients requirements have been met and recommend improvements and corrections
- Supervision of drawing production for assigned tasks is undertaken in accordance with SMEC procedures as appropriate
- Supporting other streams in the delivery of high standard designs, verification and onsite supervision
- Undertaking calculations in accordance with the project requirements (i.e. calculation packages to include Design Statement, table of contents, etc.)
- Developing new client relationships & enhancing existing relationships for developing new business
- Developing proposals including leading a team to deliver the proposal
- Effectively managing project resources, including staff
About YouSuitable applicants will be/have:
- Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering) or Equivalent
- At least 15+ years’ relevant professional experience in Geotechnical Engineering ideally on projects within Water, Hydro, Dams and Tunnels
- CPEng / RPEQ and Member of Engineers Australia
- High level consulting and client management skills
- Business planning, budgeting and commercial acumen
- Ability to interpret and communicate information of a complex nature
- Client service orientation
- Proven project management skills (achieving prescribed budget, timeframe and client requirements)
- An understanding of the business/ organisation/ marketing context of business solutions
- Familiar with relevant Australian Standards and specifications
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
- Skills in undertaking a co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment
- Skills in managing competing priorities and working under pressure
