Bring your problem-solving mindset, entrepreneurial spirit, and technical expertise to WJE's interdisciplinary team, spanning 30 office locations, company-wide.Actively hiring for structural engineering associates in the following locations: Boston, MA (buildings preferred); downtown Chicago, IL (buildings preferred); New York (buildings preferred); and San Francisco, CA (seismic, buildings preferred); and Washington, DC. You will build on your industry experience to date, as you continue to deepen your technical expertise, hone your practical problem-solving capabilities, and cultivate your project management skills. At WJE, we spend almost as much time in the field, up close and personal with our projects, as we do in the office. If you are a critical thinker, curious about how things work, and not afraid to get your hands dirty, we want you on our team! Typical Responsibilities:

  • Assume responsibility for the day-to-day success of multiple projects, including acting as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and project teams; and managing small-to-medium projects, as appropriate
  • Perform on-site investigations, condition assessments, and construction administration, which may include documenting distress, performance evaluation and field testing (including mobilizing and installing field testing equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems), collecting data and samples, and troubleshooting details
  • Apply sound engineering judgment and an understanding of governing codes, design guidelines, and construction documents for the analysis and development of practical solutions
  • Complete structural hand calculations and finite element analyses using relevant software packages (e.g., SAP2000, ETABS)
  • Prepare conceptual, preliminary, and final client deliverables, including written reports, calculation packets, construction documents, repair design details (developed by hand and in CAD), and project specifications
  • Contribute to company-wide objectives through involvement in office and company development initiatives, in-house Technical Resource Groups (TRGs) and research projects, and relevant industry committees and professional organizations

Qualifications / Key Competencies:

  • Master’s degree or better in civil, structural, or architectural engineering
  • Three to eight years of relevant industry experience
  • Licensed Structural Engineer (SE) or Professional Engineer (PE) (per state requirements); EIT with demonstrated progress towards attaining PE/SE licensure will also be considered.
  • Solid foundation in structural engineering principles with a demonstrated interest in diagnostic investigation, forensic engineering, repair design, and rehabilitation of various structural systems and construction materials
  • Effective technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Team player mindset with willingness to proactively take on various roles and responsibilities
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing demands, while maintaining productive interpersonal relationships and a high standard of excellence, integrity, and attention to detail

Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computers, printers, fax, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to attend meetings at various office, field, and construction sites
  • Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors
  • Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screens
  • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to safely work at heights
  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment
  • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards
  • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations
  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

Actual salaries will vary and will be based on several factors including consideration for a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
