Responsibilities

 What you'll be challenged to do:TranSystems’ Santa Ana, Southern California office has an opportunity for a Drainage Engineer to join our California Roadway Practice. Projects would include drainage design for new roadway facilities, as well as evaluation and rehabilitation or repair of existing drainage structures, and hydrology and hydraulic studies. Candidates will be responsible to work with the project manager, the design of projects, monitoring and adhering to budgets and schedules, assisting with QC or QA reviews, and working with other staff in completing projects. Applicants must possess strong technical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to travel for projects site visits, and to work well in a team environment on multi-disciplinary projects. The candidate will also assist in the development of the project understanding and technical approach associated with the preparation of bridge proposals. General Duties & Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Serve as hydraulic/drainage engineer for roadway/transportation projects for Caltrans, or Local Agency (Municipality, Divisions of Transportation) projects, either locally funded or state/federally-funded.
  • Conduct technical evaluations to support planning and design related to the management and conveyance of stormwater systems.
  • Participate in the preparation, oversight and review of construction plans.
  • Prepare written reports, technical memoranda and permit applications.
  • Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks.
  • Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and occasionally represents the organization in meetings to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work.
  • Receives instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected.
  • Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
  • Responsible for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
  • Research design options and document findings for Senior Project Engineer.
  • Maintains project database by writing computer programs; entering and backing up data.
  • Keeps Senior Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Usually performs as a staff advisor and consultant to technical specialty.


Qualifications

What you bring to our firm: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in the engineering field (i.e. Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical) required. 
  • Ability to obtain California Professional Engineer (PE) license within reasonable time.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and various engineering software systems depending on engineering discipline: MicroStation/; GeoPak AutoCAD; In Roads, Land Desktop, and Civil 3D.
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

  • At least 4 years of design experience preferred.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, construction and field assignments can be severe (i.e. Airport noise, inside factories, construction equipment, jack hammers, etc).

 For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in California, Colorado, or NY City, TranSystems is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This compensation range is specific to the State of California and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; internal peer equity; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At TranSystems, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
