Job Description

  The Chicago office of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) has an exciting opportunity for students who are just beginning their studies or are interested in pursuing studies in architecture, structural engineering, historic preservation, materials science, or a related field. This internship will give students the opportunity to learn about and get involved in many aspects of work done by WJE engineers and architects.WJE is a global firm of engineers, architects, and materials scientists committed to helping solve, repair, and avoid problems in existing structures. Our applied experience from more than 175,000 projects combined with unparalleled laboratory and testing capabilities have made WJE a leader in providing innovative yet practical solutions to the clients we serve.Typical Intern Responsibilities: 

  • Organizing field data and materials samples
  • Assist WJE staff with research on existing buildings, building codes, and various construction materials
  • Assist with development of technical drawings using AutoCAD and Bluebeam
  • Assist with maintenance and preparation of field-testing equipment and tools
  • Assist with general office and business operations; scanning, copying, and archiving, and organization of reference materials

Qualifications:

  • Students who have completed their sophomore year in high school, or are attending vocational school, and/or community college with an interest in Architecture, Civil & Structural Engineering, Historic Preservation, Materials Science, or a related field
  • Enthusiasm for solving problems and curiosity about how things work
  • Demonstrated integrity, and work ethic
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate equipment such as computers, printers, telephone/voice mail systems, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screens

The expected hourly rate for this position starts at $15.40 per hour and may be increased based on highest level of education completed. Additionally, intern employees accrue one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked and are eligible for paid holidays time if their working arrangement is expected to last at least 2 consecutive months.Work activities and schedule will be in accordance with the Illinois Department of Labor.WJE is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
