The Role
BGC is looking for a Senior Water Quality Modeler to join our team. The successful candidate will have a background in water quality and metal leaching / acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) theory and practice, and experience building, validating and reviewing water quality models using different types of geochemical software. As a Senior Water Quality Modeler with BGC, you will help to manage the complex water quality-related challenges faced by our clients, and will look to advance our state of practice in water quality modeling. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams and work closely with project managers, engineers, and geoscientists across BGC. The ideal candidate will also provide technical leadership and mentorship to more junior staff as we continue to grow our team. This position can be based at any of BGC’s Canadian or US office locations.
Responsibilities

  • Act as technical lead on water quality modeling projects across BGC’s business sectors (e.g., mining, pipelines, transportation).
  • Integrate with BGC’s hydrogeology and hydrology teams on coupled water balance and water quality modeling projects 
  • Train and mentor members of the geochemistry team; supervise technical work completed by Junior and Intermediate staff.
  • Work with other technical leads to develop and manage proposals, budgets, schedules, and scopes of services.
  • Help lead business development and planning initiatives, and work with client and partner representatives.
  • Travel as required, which could occasionally include shifts at remote sites to support junior team members, gain familiarity with project sites, and/or serve our clients 

 Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Graduate degree in chemistry, geochemistry, geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering or related discipline 
  • Registered Professional Engineer or Geoscientist with EGBC or similar association 
  • 8 to 10+ years of professional experience in water quality modeling, coupled with relevant field experience  
  • Experience with geochemical and hydrological modeling platforms including GoldSim, PHREEQC and/or Geochemists Workbench
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory reporting of geochemical test work and interpretation of results
  • Able to work efficiently with large datasets using database management programs such as EQWIN or EQuIS, and/or incorporating scripts using Python, C++, or VBA.
  • Possess understanding of low temperature geochemistry, ML/ARD theory and practice
  • Proficient in technical writing; able to prepare and review reports. Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills 
  • Able to communicate with clients, understand their project goals, and apply that understanding to project work

 Desired Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Experience with other modelling platforms, e.g., HYDRUS, MODFLOW, FEFLOW, SEEP/W an asset 


Position Requirements

This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. Driver’s LicenseBGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck.  Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.
