We approach problems with creativity and innovation.  The Schnabel Services team in Herndon, Virginia is seeking a Project/Senior Geotechnical or Structural Engineer to support our interdisciplinary team.  We are looking for an experienced, motivated candidate with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong multi-disciplinary team. The Schnabel Services group provides a core of geotechnical and geostructural design and construction services. We are a hands-on team of civil, mechanical, and geotechnical engineers which provides customized solutions to Federal clients. At Schnabel Services we design, test, and field a range of structural and mechanical systems requiring multidisciplinary support in engineering, design and construction. Our team is practical, hands on, and motivated to deliver on high value efforts.Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform geotechnical and structural engineering activities within an interdisciplinary team designing, building, testing, and documenting team developments and deliverables. 
  • Design, install, and interpret instrumentation for use in engineering recommendations
  • Prepare and review design calculations, engineering reports, construction drawings and technical specifications.
  • Planning and performing material and system testing programs
  • Project and task management.
  • Proposal development.
  • Scheduling, coordination, and oversight of junior staff and deliverable development.
  • Performing geological, geotechnical, and structural engineering analysis.
  • Preparing and reviewing field test logs and geological/engineering reports.
  • Perform and oversee construction observation of specialty geotechnical features.
  • Development of geotechnical drawings and specifications.
  • Must be willing to travel; some overnight travel should be expected.
  • Work as a team member within the SSI team and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.
  • Current Secret Security Clearance

Required Skills/Experience:

  • 5+ years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering is required
  • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Civil Engineering is preferred
  • Licensed Professional Engineer with the ability to obtain reciprocity, or on track toward Professional licensure
  • Previous geotechnical evaluation, design, and construction experience is a plus
  • Prior engineering design experience in the geotechnical or structural fields.
  • Knowledge of design codes including IBC and AASHTO
  • Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation
  • Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and data management computer programs  
  • Experience with geotechnical analysis and design software
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Familiarity with safe use of common wood and metal working tools
  • Ability to multi-task
  • A strong work ethic and the desire to perform professionally at a high level
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and well-organized
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders and work outside in various weather conditions

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment screening
