GENERAL DESCRIPTION Performs entry-level to routine (journey-level) geosciences work. Work involves preparing plans, estimates, and calculations; performing inspections; and collecting and analyzing data. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Geologic Specialist job classification series is intended primarily for those employees who may hold the Geoscientist-in-Training certification, but is not yet a licensed Professional Geoscientist. Employees typically perform research, and prepare and conduct geological, geochemical, and geophysical field studies and surveys under the guidance of a licensed Professional Geoscientist. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Collects and analyzes geological, geochemical, geohydrological, and geophysical information from sources such as survey data, rock samples, well logs, boreholes, and aerial photos. Collects technical data, analyzes findings, and assists with developing recommendations for programs or projects. Conducts inspections for compliance with laws and specifications. Researches laws, regulations, and policies; and delivers responses to the public and governmental agencies. Prepares plans, estimates, and calculations. May assist with reviewing and evaluating geology reports, test reports, studies, and data; and assists with the development of recommendations for programs or projects. May assist with conducting geological, geochemical, geohydrological, and geophysical field studies and surveys; gathering samples; and/or conducting drilling and test programs used to collect data for research or application.
May assist with conducting geoscientific studies to provide information for use in regional
development, resource management, environmental investigations, land use, site selection, and
development of other projects.
Performs related work as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Experience in geosciences work. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university
with a bachelor’s degree in geology, geophysics, soil science, or a related field. Experience and
education may be substituted for one another.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of geosciences principles, techniques, and procedures; testing methods, processes,
and procedures; mathematics and statistics; and the practical application of geosciences and
Skill in scientific data management; collecting and assessing geological, geohydrological, and
geophysical data; applying modeling and statistical procedures; conducting laboratory tests; the
use of a computer, geographic information system application, and other applicable software;
and the use of standard tools of the profession.
Ability to plan and coordinate projects, to conduct inspections, to apply geological concepts, and
to communicate effectively.
