Job Description

  Geotechnical Engineer for Seismic Design and Soil Structure Interaction Analyses for underground infrastructure projects and building projects

Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but not be limited to the following:  
• Performing nonlinear site response analysis using both conventional software and finite element software • Performing 2D and 3D, static and seismic geotechnical finite element analyses that feature: advanced constitutive models, consolidation stages, and fluid flow • Performing seismic soil-structure interaction analysis for foundations, basements, tunnels, shafts and other below-grade infrastructure in finite element software • Performing 2D and 3D discrete element modeling of rock slopes and tunnels in rock • Carrying out automation tasks using javascript and python programming languages • Carrying out part time site supervision of ground investigations or construction activities, e.g. earthworks, ground improvement, deep/shallow foundations, and rockslide mitigation 
• Preparing laboratory test schedules in order to calibrate advanced constitutive models 
• Interpreting ground conditions and understanding their impact on design and construction 
• Preparing shallow and deep foundation designs, slope stability calculations and seismic assessments 
• Carrying out temporary support of excavation designs, for tunnel shafts and cut and cover tunnels/subway stations 
• Working alongside engineers from other Arup disciplines (e.g. civil, structural, bridge, digital, sustainability, and advanced technology & research) to develop holistic design solutions 
• Prepare geotechnical desk study reports for site due diligence 
 
Qualifications 
 
Required:  
• Masters of Science or Masters of Engineering in Geotechnical Engineering 
• 3.0 GPA or higher 
• Basic programming and finite element modeling experience • Sound knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals, soil and rock mechanics 
• Completion of advanced courses in foundations, soil mechanics, geotechnical earthquake engineering, constitutive modeling, and finite element analysis. 
• Willingness to travel for projects as needed 
• Curiosity to learn and stay up to date on relevant advances in the industry 
• The ability to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work and exceptional organization skills required for our constantly evolving environment 
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working 
• Presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels 
 
Preferred:  
• PhD in Geotechnical Engineering 
• 3.5 GPA Preferred 
• EIT/FE desired 
• Familiarity with ground motion hazard analysis 
• Past history of technical presentations and technical writing 
• Proficiency with the finite element software LS-DYNA and PLAXIS 
• Familiarity with the finite difference software 3D FLAC  • Familiarity with the discrete element software UDEC and 3DEC  • Completion of coursework in structural engineering  • Prior work experience in geotechnical engineering, tunneling, or related field • Previous experience with Lpile, Group, Slope/W, Slide, Settle3D, ArcGIS, LeapFrog and BIM software 
• Experience and interest in programming (especially python and javascript)
