Job Description

Summary  This is a full-time position to provide geotechnical engineering assistance to the Geotechnical Department.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage and perform all phases of geotechnical investigations for major development/construction projects.
  • Provide assistance to overall project management.
  • Supervise and mentor staff engineers and geologists.
  • Assist in training staff in proper field and office procedures.
  • Prepare and present proposals, scopes of work, and budgets for new projects.
  • Prepare and/or review technical reports.
  • Interpret laboratory test data for use in engineering analyses.
  • Provide and/or evaluate engineering analyses for site/road development, foundation designs, slope stability, and seismic hazards.
  • Review grading and foundation plans for conformance with geotechnical recommendations.
  • Assist with seismic analyses.
  • Consistently exercise discretion and judgment in all work tasks.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • Candidates should possess a B.S. degree from an ABET accredited civil engineering or related program and 4 years’ progressive experience.
  • Should have a strong background in evaluating and solving problem situations of a geotechnical nature that might arise during construction.
  • Experience with geotechnical drilling and field investigations, geotechnical analysis, and report writing is required.

 Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • PE Required: This position is for a licensed engineer to practice geotechnical engineering in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

 Mathematical SkillsAbility to work with mathematical concepts such as geometry, trigonometry, fundamentals of calculus, and differential equations. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, differentiation, and proportions to practical situations or to determine solutions to problems. Strong mathematical reasoning skills. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities      

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to effectively present information to clients, co-workers, and the public.      
  • Knowledge of laboratory and construction materials testing.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, and have experience with specialized engineering software such as gINT, Geosystems, SLOPE/W, Settle3, and All-Pile.
  • Must have a sound understanding of soil mechanics, laboratory testing, and design of foundations, embankments/slopes and retaining structures of various types.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in earthquake engineering is desired.
  • Basic knowledge of geology/geologic features is required. The ability to travel and work in remote areas under adverse conditions is required.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds.     
  • Experience with geologic mapping, rock mechanics and geophysics.
  • Ability to prioritize special projects and daily workload to ensure that all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs frequently.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and ability to adjust focus.On occasion, must have the ability to work at remotes sites.  Ability to walk and hike through rough terrain, snow, and ice; dig with shovel or digging bars; routinely lift between 30 & 50 pounds.
