The Role

BGC is seeking an Intermediate to Senior Civil or Geotechnical Engineering Technologist to join our team in our geotechnical laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of geotechnical laboratory testing duties including those relating to the performance of both index and advanced geotechnical tests. BGC’s laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility which specializes in strength, compressibility and permeability testing of soil, and strength testing of rock. Our testing equipment includes cyclic dynamic simple shear, servo-controlled fully-automated triaxial and automated oedometer systems.The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a keen desire to contribute to technical excellence while living BGC’s values of One Team, Excellence, Curiosity, Common Sense, and Clarity.

Responsibilities

Primarily focused on geotechnical index testing including, but not limited to:

  • Grain size analysis (sieve analysis) including hydrometers
  • Atterberg Limits
  • Standard and Modified Proctors
  • Moisture content determination

Knowledge of advanced laboratory testing of soil and rock would be an asset. This includes, but not limited to:

  • Unconfined compression of rock core
  • Flexible wall permeameter testing
  • Direct shear testing of soil and rock discontinuities
  • Triaxial Compression testing (drained and undrained)
  • Simple Shear (static and dynamic) testing of soil
  • Consolidation testing by incremental load and constant rate of strain
  • Tailings characterization
  • Liquefaction testing
  • Large scale triaxial, consolidation and direct shear testing of gravel and rockfill

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Civil/Geotechnical Technician/Technologist Diploma or a relevant undergraduate degree in Civil (Geotechnical) engineering
  • 5+ years of geotechnical laboratory experience
  • Currently registered as an CET
  • Applied knowledge of Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Monitoring, Technical Writing, Field Testing and Laboratory Testing
  • Project management skills and the ability to work with client teams on large projects
  • Excellent oral and written communicator
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment
  • Available for travel and fieldwork, potentially in remote settings
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical laboratory testing
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to prepare, present, and peer-review laboratory reports
