Job Description

Summary The Civil Project Engineer is responsible for leading the civil design and analysis efforts on a variety of engineering projects.  The person in this position must be a licensed engineer to practice civil engineering in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire. The person in this position will show a strong knowledge of Civil Design Specifications and be able to quickly learn and apply other design codes as necessary to meet project objectives.  The person in this position is also expected to work well with others, absorb and apply constructive criticism and seek guidance from more experienced team members; as well as provide guidance to less experienced team members as necessary.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

  • Perform civil engineering related calculations, analysis, and design.
  • Independently complete medium to highly complex engineering projects.
  • Coordinate AutoCAD drafting requirements for civil engineering design projects.
  • Coordinate with government agencies, client staff, and other professionals to obtain design information and approvals.
  • Interact with clients, contractors, suppliers and teaming partners in a professional manner to develop project solutions.
  • Prepare and route project related correspondence and record keeping.
  • Independently complete projects in an accurate, efficient, and organized manner so that they can be easily followed and quickly reviewed by other civil staff
  • Learn and apply company standards and best practices
  • Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Lead the design efforts in the role of engineer-of-record on a variety of project types
  • Work efficiently to meet deadlines and perform tasks within a given amount of time
  • Mentor and oversee the work of less experienced design team members
  • Efficiently work with drafters to assemble complete and accurate engineering plans
  • Expertly employ a variety of design codes related to the industry
  • Develop rudimentary understanding of project budgets and schedules
  • Consistently exercise discretion and judgment in all work tasks.

 Supervisory Responsibilities                                       May supervise a team of Civil Engineers (from intern to level 3). Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Qualifications To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience This position requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil, structural) from an accredited university and 6 years’ progressive experience or a Master’s degree in civil engineering (civil, structural) and 5 years’ progressive experience. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations This position must be a licensed engineer to practice civil engineering in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire. Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Mathematical Skills Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals.  Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to effectively present information to clients, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Project software. 
  • Strong understanding of structural behavior and mechanics of materials.
  • Accurately complete engineering calculations for all major material types including concrete, steel, timber, and/or masonry
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge and experience is highly desirable.
  • Advanced level proficiency with MathCAD
  • Advanced level proficiency with one or more of the following structural analysis programs: SAP2000, Risa3D, Midas, or GTStrudl
  • Advanced knowledge of Civil Design Specifications
  • Advanced understanding of seismic design principles and non-linear analysis techniques
  • Exceptional technical and communication skills
  • Strong organization skills
