Job Description

At Tetra Tech, you will work with high-performing teams who are passionate about using their expertise to find solutions to complex problems in water, environment, infrastructure, resource management, energy, and international development.  We are currently seeking enthusiastic and experienced Botanical and/or Wetland Field Biologist with advanced knowledge of GIS software. The primary responsibility of the position would be to setup biological field collection GIS software (ArcGIS Collector, ArcPad, or similar), collect field data, and post-process the data. The position would require regular field work in a variety of climates and ecological regions with a primary focus located in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains regions of the U.S. Responsibilities:

  • GIS support including setting up tablets with Collector for ArcGIS for field data collection; compiling, organizing, and conducting QA/QC of data; completing spatial analyses; and creating tables and figures       
  • Field data collection will include botanical, wetlands, streams, soils, wildlife, and other field surveys. The position will require extensive travel during the field season, with overnight travel for up to 8-10 days at a time
  • Field data analysis with an ability to produce GIS data for clients as well as report quality figures 


  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences with an emphasis in Geographical Informational Systems.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience preferred
  • A strong background of coursework and/or experience in a natural science (e.g., botany, soils, wetland science, or ecology) and field data collection
  • Data management and excellent communication skills are essential
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic data analyses, compile data, and write technical documents
  • Demonstrated ability to use and create spreadsheets or databases to summarize data and create tables
  • Demonstrated ability to use and create maps and organize spatial data in a GIS environment
  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, and the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field are critical
  • Applicants must be willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions and often miles from a vehicle
  • Physical challenges typically encountered may include long off-trail hikes, steep slopes, extreme hot and cold conditions and biological hazards (animals and plants)
  • The successful applicant will be safety conscience and continually assess ways to mitigate hazards
  • Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and have experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle on rough terrain
  • Applicant must be able to work with and communicate with a diverse group of co-workers and clients to provide high quality and efficient work products

Other Desirable Knowledge and Experience:

  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and enjoyment of working outdoors
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills, including oral and written
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Experience setting up and using electronic field data collection devices and software (GPS units, handheld tablets, Collector for GIS, Survey123)
  • Knowledge and experience identifying plants in the field and using dichotomous keys
  • Knowledge and/or experience with botanical and other biological surveys, wetland and stream identification and delineation and a variety of vegetation sampling techniques such as line-point intercept and other methods
  • Technical writing, study plan compilation, describing baseline conditions, environmental assessment and review is also desirable
