Job Description

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) currently seeking a Geotechnical/Dam Safety Project Manager with 6 to 10 years of experience for our Dams and Levee Safety Group in our Norwood, Massachusetts office. The position offers great potential for professional growth in an exciting working environment and the opportunity to apply the latest technologies to our dam/levee-related projects. A strong passion to work on dams and levees is essential for this position. The qualified candidate must have strong leadership and project management experience with some experience working on dams/levees. Skills and the ability to generate direct business development experience during their career, with the ability to generate project leads and build client relationships is preferred.

This position that requires direct interaction with clients and the ability to manage and mentor GZA staff level engineers. The role will also require collaboration with GZA’s current dams/levees and water resources staff located in our Springfield (MA), New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania offices.

Key Duties:

Performing/managing dam and/or levee safety inspections

Coordinating and supervising test borings and instrumentation installations and construction monitoring for dam and levee rehabilitation projects and dam removal projects.

Providing data analysis, organization, and interpretation in support of dam/levee inspections, engineering evaluations, and dam/levee rehabilitations projects and dam removal projects

Executing and/or supervising geotechnical engineering analyses including seepage and slope stability analyses of embankment dams and levees, toe drain and filter designs, gravity dam stability analyses

Coordinating with GZA’s Water Resources engineers regarding hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for spillway capacity evaluations, dam break analyses, and Emergency Action Plans

Assisting/managing FERC Part 12 Dam Inspections

Writing inspection/engineering reports and assisting in preparing permit applications

Designing dam rehabilitation projects including stability improvements, overtopping protection, seepage control, etc.

Preparing construction plans and technical specifications

Performing cost/quantity estimates and project scheduling

Communicating effectively and efficiently with team members, clients and contractors.

Providing leadership/mentoring to technical staff

Preparing technical proposals and cost estimates

Working with GZA Principals and interacting with clients and regulatory agencies

Executing project management duties including managing and tracking budgets, invoicing, assessing staffing requirements

Qualifications:

B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field of practice is required.

M.S. in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical focus is preferred

Professional Engineer license in MA is required with the ability to obtain PE in CT, NJ, and NY

An ideal candidate will have at least 6 to 10 years of experience in civil/geotechnical engineering, with direct involvement in dam/levee safety inspections, condition assessments, subsurface exploration programs, engineering analyses, dam rehabilitation/dam removal design, and regulatory permitting

Direct experience completing projects with public sector/municipal agencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey ,and New York is highly preferred

Proven experience with design and development of engineering technical specifications, cost estimating and other related bidding documents

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to speak publicly

Solid project financial management skills; knowledge of production support systems and personal computer proficiency are all required competencies

Experience in providing technical and project leadership to staff-level or junior level engineers

A strong background using various geotechnical computer software such as SEEP/W and, SLOPE/W. Experience with finite element analysis software such as PLAXIS will be a plus

Proven experience with and directing staff with AutoCAD and ArcView-GIS will be a plus

Experience with the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and/or the New York City Department of Environmental Protection is preferred

Occasional out-of-town travel will be required. Candidate must have consistent means of transportation to/from project sites

GZA’s Dam and Levee Safety Group is made up predominately by geotechnical engineers. Typical project teams include hydrologic and hydraulic engineers from our Water Resources Group and ecological professionals from our Natural Resource Group. GZA’s Norwood Dam and Levee Safety Group routinely executes project in the New England and Mid-Atlantic States and occasionally in other areas of the country.
