Geotechnical engineering specialist to lead and support geotechnical engineering activities for multiple OG&C projects/studies/proposals executed out of the Houston, TX office, which include LNG terminals, oil refineries, and other chemical facilities. The successful candidate may also be asked to support projects executed by the Infrastructure GBU (rail, airports, fossil and renewable power), Mining & Metals GBU (alumina refineries, aluminum smelters, copper concentrators), and NS&E GBU (nuclear power, government services). The position will be part of the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group and will be based in Houston, TX. The successful candidate is expected to work independently, but will report to and receive technical supervision and functional oversight from an Engineering Group Supervisor or others depending on the nature of work task. The successful candidate will be required to supervise and direct the work of a team of G&HES engineers working on the assigned project, manage budget and schedule, and coordinate work tasks with the project Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA) group, other engineering disciplines, and other functions.
The position requires working on multiple projects/studies at any given time, preparing subsurface investigations for new and existing facilities, technically directing the work in the field, assigning laboratory tests, and developing geotechnical parameters based on the results of the investigation. Responsiblities include studying site development stratergies and most suitable type of ground improvement and foundation type for the project facilities, performing and/or checking geotechnical analyses such as stability of soil and rock slopes, bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations, lateral earth pressures, and axial and lateral pile capacities. Responsibilities also include preparation and/or checking of geotechnical engineering reports and presenting the results of the investigations and reports to members of the project team. Work will also involve communication on geotechnical issues with the project team during the engineering design stage of the project. During the construction phase of projects, responsibilities will include overview of earthwork operations, monitoring of pile installation and load testing, inspection of critical foundation subgrade, and monitoring of ground improvement. The work may also involve interfacing with and/or providing oversight of outside geotechnical consultants hired by Bechtel or the Owner to perform these tasks.
Work will require travel to project sites on short and long-term assignments. Travel may also be required to other Bechtel offices and job sites in and outside the United States.
Grade 26: An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of working experience in that field or a person with a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering and minimum 5 years of experience is needed. Professional registration is required.
Grade 27: An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum of 15 years of working experience in that field or a person with a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering and minimum 10 years of experience is needed. Professional registration is required.
Should be familiar with computer applications such as (or equivalent to) Plaxis, LPILE, GROUP, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, GRLWEAP, gINT, and have a working knowledge of building codes applicable to the oil and gas industry.
Must demonstrate strong verbal and written skills to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations, specifications and other forms of documentation. Must be familiar with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Should be willing and have the ability to travel to and remain at jobsites in the United States and overseas on short- and long-term assignments. Must have legal right to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship.
