The Geotechnical Manager will manage geotechnical support at Nevada operating sites through direct action or through subordinates; mentor and trainer for geotechnical and mining engineers in ground control, support and stability matters; responsible to report to senior management including country managers on geotechnical performance.
Reporting to the Executive Managing Director, the Manager, Engineering is responsible for the following:
Manage and/or conduct stability and risk assessments at operating mines and projects. Conduct annual geotechnical performance reviews at Barrick’s underground mining operations. Assign and manage consultants and drilling contractors as required.
Provide technical input to mine planning and design, to include data analysis of work performed by consultants or subordinates. Ensure that mine plans reflect recommended geotechnical designs and monitoring programs are in place.
Ensure that sites and projects adhere to QA/QC, and design guidelines (standards) as well as best practices and new technology if applicable.
Manage and participate in related R&D projects.
Ensure that good communication is maintained between the company’s geotechnical engineers and other industry leaders in this field. Mentoring and training of geotechnical engineers, particularly for development of modeling and analysis skills is critical.
Development of strategies for improving efficiencies and reducing operational mining costs.
Collaborate with mine operations and process divisions to ensure execution of Nevada surface and underground mining strategy and vision
Ensures efficient contractor selection process and identifies opportunities for improvement in all sustaining capital projects throughout the course of the project.
Drives the consistent expectations, understanding and application of engineering processes with site GM’s and senior leadership.
Liaises with corporate stakeholders on best in class opportunities; reports and shares progress with leadership to drive sustainable improvement (Integrated planning).
Bachelor of Science degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related field or equivalent experience required
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in management required.
Experience in managing underground and open pit operations preferred.
Large scale, long hole and sublevel open stope experience preferred.
Familiarity with trends in mining process/associated outcomes from a business/technical view required
In-depth knowledge of underground mining methods, technology, and best practices required
Practical experience with numerical software and modeling utilized for stress and deformation analysis and for mine design at a skill level sufficient to train others preferred
Practical experience in design of backfill and paste-fill systems and related delivery systems preferred
Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to communicate effectively and clearly, in writing and verbally, with all levels of the organization required
Team oriented with strong leadership skills and demonstrated commitment to safety and health, and environment excellence along with technical best practices required
Ability to think strategically, demonstrate good judgment, strong organizational and planning skills required
Ability and willingness to work effectively with people from diverse cultures required
Ability to thrive in both corporate and site work environments required
Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with a range of stakeholders, including Technical Services and Operations.
