Schnabel Engineering is currently seeking a Senior Tunnel/Geotechnical Engineer to support our growing Tunnel Engineering Services Group (TESG). Schnabel’s TESG, formerly Lachel & Associates, focuses on the design of tunnels, shafts, and underground structures for transportation, water/wastewater, and hydropower facilities. As an expansion of our staff, this role will perform upcoming design work for large projects in the Austin, TX and Washington, DC areas.
Schnabel is looking for tunnel engineer candidates with 8 to 15 years of experience in geotechnical or structural engineering with specific expertise in the design of tunnels and underground structures, excavation support systems, ground improvement, trenchless pipeline installations, and/or tunnel inspection and rehabilitation methods. Knowledge of soil and rock mechanics, rock mass classification systems, geotechnical and geostructural analysis methods, and techniques as applied to the design of underground structures is necessary.
Lead the planning, management and execution efforts of tunnel design and construction management projects
Plan, manage and implement geotechnical investigation programs for tunnel projects
Evaluate geotechnical exploration and testing results, interpret and characterize subsurface conditions, and prepare reports, technical memoranda, and Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBRs)
Perform conventional geotechnical and tunnel structural design analyses
Develop design of tunnels, shafts, and other underground facilities including preparation of calculations and design reports
Develop tunnel and shaft specifications, drawings, and other project contract documents
Collaborate with multidiscipline and multi-location internal and external teams
Mentor and train junior staff/project engineers
Support marketing and business development across the country with emphasis on the Northeast, Texas and California
Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering (Master’s Degree preferred)
Licensed Professional Engineer (California PE preferred)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong analytical skills
Minimum of 8 years tunnel engineering experience with significant practical experience on tunnel and underground construction projects
Experience with design and construction of shafts and jacking/receiving pits, including development of earth and groundwater loads, assessment of support types, and development of support of excavation, initial ground support, and final liner systems
Demonstrated background in rock mechanics and rock tunneling, including experience with drill & blast, NATM, and TBM tunneling in soft ground and hard rock
Structural design experience of precast concrete segmental tunnel liners (preferred)
Candidates must undergo a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check, plus a drug screen.
