Job Description

The Bridge Group Director provides strategic business and technical leadership and oversees the day-to-day operations of Patrick’s Bridge practice across multiple offices. The Group Director is responsible for the technical development and innovative technologies of the bridge practice. They need to have personal engagement to ensure the practice has high-quality, on-time and on-budget delivery of all bridge and bridge-related elements of Patrick’s multi-disciplined projects. This role will require working collaboratively with other discipline Group Directors and Division leadership to build deisgn teams to effectiely and efficiently deliver work by prioritizing, coordinating and sharing resources across multiple offices to ensure client satisifaction and successful fulfillment of all project commitments. This individual will also need to have the skills necessary to build strong technical relationships with key clients, be a strong listener, and be able to develop innovative technical solutions necessary to secure work. Training, mentoring, retaining, and attracting talent will be essential skills to create an environment and culture of growth and ultimately a thriving corporate bridge practice.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical and Quality Control

* Able to collaborate and develop innovative technical solutions that will meet client needs

* Build teams to deliver and fulfill the contractual requirements of our clients with quality service, on-budget and on-schedule delivery

* Be responsible and accountable for quality control of all work performed and managed within the bridge practice

* Ensure Quality Control procedures are being adhered to by staff on all work produced

Human Resources Management

* Evaluate staff’s managerial and technical competencies and provide effective feedback, mentoring and training for accelerated employee personal growth across the practice

* Develop others to grow a deep bench of talent so the practice can meet its potential growth opportunities

* Provide direction and coaching to enable others to effectively mentor staff to increase overall practice’s capabilities

* Foster a positive and innovative environment of teamwork and team building through effective, regular communication with employees

* Help to ensure proper work-life balance of staff, which is critical to staff retention, development and company sustainability

* Network internally and externally to identify and procure talent

Business Development

* Develop relationships with key clients’ technical counterparts to understand emerging trends and issues, share intelligence with Patrick’s client service teams, develop and share innovative solutions to client needs, as needed and in close collaboration with other Patrick entities

* Develop and maintain relationships with external parties that would be useful in the pursuit of work

* Actively participate in proposal generation and technical strategy development

Project Oversight

* Hold the practice’s project teams accountable for their technical quality of work and project efficiencies

* Participate in monthly project reviews, as needed, to collaboratively develop appropriate action plans to address either shortfalls or opportunities in project performance

* Be actively involved in the technical implementation of those action plans to achieve the desired outcome

Corporate Commitment

* Participates in corporate activities, newsletters, presentations and events, and encourages staff to do so also. These events are key for: staff development, general awareness of the company’s capabilities and accomplishments, introduction of new methods, team building, camaraderie, and corporate culture


* Promote safety in design and construction

* Collaborate with Patrick’s Safety Manager to determine the safety training required for all positions, and ensures such training occurs


* Minimum Master’s Degree

* Professional Engineering License Required

* Structural Engineering License Required

* 15-20 years of engineering experience with a focus on bridges (AASHTO and AREMA-based design criteria)
