Job Description

The Chicago office of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking an Architectural CAD and Field Technician for a full-time position to prepare CAD drawings and/or perform field work for the inspection, repair and rehabilitation of structural, facade, roofing, and waterproofing systems. The ideal candidate will have the CAD expertise necessary to prepare preliminary and final structural and architectural drawings derived from existing construction documents, rough layouts, verbal instructions, photographs, field notes, and sketches, as well as an understanding of building enclosure construction.


Demonstrated proficiency using Autodesk’s AutoCAD Architecture 2018.

Current knowledge of industry design and drafting standards.

An Associate degree in Construction Technology, Drafting Technology, Computer-Aided Design and Drafting or similar discipline. Equivalent experience will be considered.

Hands-on experience in construction is desired.

Must be detail oriented with effective written and verbal skills.

Ability to travel on occasion to project work sites to provide CAD support in the field, or for data retrieval and verification.

Knowledgeable/Skilled with Adobe Acrobat or Blue Beam, Illustrator, Photoshop, and MS Office.

Ability to use or desire/willingness to learn Revit, 3D Studio Max and Google SketchUp.

Valid driver’s license required.


Prepares drawings with AutoCAD

Maintains local CAD detail library

Performs testing, sample collection, documentation, construction observations, and investigation in the field (training will be provided)

Maintains and organizes field equipment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computer, printer, fax, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

Ability to attend meetings at various office, field and construction sites

Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.

Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors

Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials and computer screens

Ability to record data clearly

Ability to travel

Ability to safely work at heights

Ability to safely operate various construction power tools

Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards

Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations

Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment

Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

Associates or better in AutoCad or related field.
