As our Geotechnical Lab Manager, you will set the standards for behavior, productivity and quality in the lab. You will be responsible for scheduling laboratory tests, coordinating field and laboratory technician schedules for project work, and working with our Quality Assurance Manager to ensure that tests are completed in accordance with appropriate standards (such as ASTM specifications) and at an acceptable level of quality. As our Geotechnical Lab Manager, you are also responsible for the planning and maintenance of our laboratory facilities and the procurement and maintenance of equipment needed to perform these services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains soil sample inventory control system in accordance with the laboratory quality assurance plan and company quality management system, ensuring availability, storage and subsequent timely disposal of soil samples submitted to laboratory for review and testing.
Serves as a resource for staff regarding testing options and limitations, appropriate standards, lab capabilities and possible alternatives, if appropriate.
In conjunction with the QAM, develops and maintains lab procedures and documentation to facilitate effective use of lab facilities and ensure smooth operation. Collaborates with QAM and staff in other locations to promote consistency with testing, reporting and QA/QC procedures company-wide.
Maintains lab and equipment area cleanliness, safety and efficiency including maintenance of equipment and working with the QAM for equipment calibration and maintenance of related records. Maintains compliance with applicable standards by completing appropriate testing and documentation as needed.
Plans, schedules and monitors operations and staff in the laboratory area, including responsibility for coordinating and assigning work and ensuring adequate staffing for the purpose of meeting workload needs.
Leads, trains, coaches/mentors and directs field and laboratory staff, ensuring the team is proactive and responsive, demonstrating success with measurable results.
Fosters and maintains a positive, professional and productive working atmosphere.
Tracks progress on laboratory testing projects and coordinates with project engineers to communicate lab priorities and progress.
Maintains awareness of and accountability for lab billing (in conjunction with Accounting), financials and performance in coordination with the Assistant Group Leader, Group Leader and Business Unit Leader.
High school diploma required; Associate’s degree or equivalent preferred
A minimum of five years of experience with supervising testing and analysis functions in a geotechnical laboratory setting.
Strong MS Office Suite skills (Excel, Outlook and Word)
Knowledge of various soil and water characteristics and the application of test results in engineering analyses.
Professional-level verbal and written communication skills.
The ability to effectively interpret and apply information from technical manuals.
Ability to perform advanced mathematical and statistical techniques.
Ability to make fine discernments in touch, sound and sight when performing various laboratory analyses.
Possession of or ability to obtain certification by a national organization (e.g., NICET).
