Geosyntec is seeking a highly motivated geotechnical or environmental engineering intern to join our team in Columbia, Maryland for approximately 13 to 16 weeks during the summer of 2019. The ideal candidate currently holds a B.S. degree in civil / environmental engineering or a closely related field, is currently enrolled in a graduate civil or environmental engineering program; and is seeking a full-time opportunity for approximately 3-4 months (mid-May through August 2019, dates TBD). Exceptionally qualified undergraduate students will also be considered for this position.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
This opportunity is for 40 hours a week and part-time employment will not be considered. It is preferable to have an intern candidate who could return to the position for up to two additional semester rotations during their undergraduate or graduate studies. Candidates are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the office.
Some of the key responsibilities for the engineering co-op / intern position may include:
Conducting geotechnical engineering analyses such as slope stability, settlement, bearing capacity, and seepage;
Performing analyses such as stormwater management design;
Assisting with geotechnical investigations, soil classifications, and environmental site characterization;
Technical writing of reports, letters, memoranda, plans, specifications, and proposals;
Data input and analysis, including preparing maps, tables, and figures;
Researching and contacting material suppliers and preparing cost analyses and CAD drawings; and
Performing fieldwork associated with design and construction services
Preferred candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in civil, geological, or environmental engineering from an accredited college or university. Other requirements include:
Extensive coursework in geotechnical and/or environmental engineering (foundations engineering, soil mechanics, environmental engineering, applied hydrology and hydraulics) or geology;
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access);
Familiarity with computer aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD or Microstation;
Ability to perform fieldwork; and
Valid U.S. driver’s license and a clean driving record for travel to work sites is required.
Additionally, the following are preferred, but not required:
Current HAZWOPER certification;
Proficiency with numerical analysis software such as Mathematica, MATLAB, MathCAD, Microsoft Excel, or FREEMAT;
Proficiency with geotechnical analysis software such as PLAXIS, FLAC, SHAKE, SLIDE, or Slope-W; and
Proficiency with gINT.
