Job Description

BGC is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer with a focus on advanced numerical modelling and earthquake geotechnical engineering. While this intermediate-level position will focus on those two core competencies, the successful candidate should expect a rich and varied role, to include: advanced numerical analysis, advanced laboratory testing, field data collection and reporting. The successful candidate will support our in-house geotechnical experts in advanced numerical modelling with FLAC2D and 3D. They will also have experience with geotechnical and seismic software such as SHAKE, DESRA, VERSAT, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, SeismoSignal, RSPMatch and familiarity with some user defined constitutive models (such as PM4Sand, NorSand, UBCSAND etc.)

Required Skills

One to five years of post-graduate experience in consulting geotechnical engineering

Numerical modelling with finite element or finite difference codes, including earthquake dynamic analysis of soil structures and soil-structure interaction (FLAC 2D and 3D experience is preferred)

Experience with field investigation techniques such as CPT, SPT, BPT

Laboratory testing including cyclic triaxial and cyclic simple shear

Static and seismic liquefaction triggering assessment

Evaluation of seismic slope stability and lateral spreading displacement, and liquefaction induced settlement

Selection and scaling of earthquake time histories for numerical analysis

Interpretation of seismic hazard reports and application to seismic design

The candidate must have a strong theoretical understanding of soil mechanics (e.g. critical state soil mechanics) and geotechnical earthquake engineering at the graduate level

An interest in field investigation and advanced geotechnical instrumentation design

Desired Skills

Preference is for a candidate with a master’s degree in civil or geotechnical engineering, with a focus on numerical modelling
