Job Description

BGC’s Calgary office is seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical or Geological Engineer to work on geotechnical, tailings, and closure projects for oil sands mining projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background and minimum 10 years relevant work experience since graduation. The suitable candidate should have experience working in multi-disciplined project teams on projects in remote, challenging environments, and a desire to occasionally travel and work in remote conditions.

Candidates shall possess an undergraduate degree in Civil (geotechnical) or Geological Engineering. A post-graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering is desirable. A strong understanding of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, and reclamation for mining projects, specifically oil sands mining projects, are essential. Project management skills, including the ability to manage schedules, budgets, and multi-disciplinary projects and interact with clients are essential. Experience and a willingness to supervise and mentor junior staff are also necessary. Candidates must be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Alberta and they must have a valid driver’s license.

Work Locations

The office location is in Calgary, Alberta, with projects situated mainly in northern Alberta, with potential for other projects throughout the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Professional Profile

Minimum of a bachelor degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering.

10+ years of consulting experience, or experience working for an oil sands operator or project. Design, construction, field, or operations experience (e.g., drilling, construction monitoring, instrumentation, inspections) with oil sands waste dumps, pits, and tailings areas is essential.

Experience conducting slope stability and seepage analyses using GeoStudio software.

Experience using 3D software programs (e.g., AutoCad, Surpac, Muck 3D) for design of mine structures such as waste dumps, ponds, channels, tailings areas.

Experience using geographic information system software (ArcGIS, Global Mapper) would be an asset.

Currently eligible for registration as a P.Eng. with APEGA.

Available for travel and fieldwork, potentially in remote settings.

Excellent oral and written communicator, with the ability to prepare engineering design documents (reports, drawings, and presentations).

Project management skills and the ability to work with client teams on large projects.

Ability to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
